ITINERARY
DAY 1: CUSCO – HUARAN – CANCHACANCHA (L) (D)
We leave Cusco city early to get headed through the Sacred Valley to the village of Calca where we continue on paved road to Fundo Huaran (a place for the collection of the production of wool during the Colonial era). Here we meet with our porters and mules, coming from the community of Cuncani, carrying our equipment and backpacks, and we start our trek in the Urubamba mountain range. We will see a variety of native flora and fauna, small birds, and especially hummingbirds. We will also pass through a forest of specific native Incan trees called Queuñas that have adopted to the high altitudes and can grow as high as 4800 meters above sea level. We will have lunch alongside a river, and then make a gradual ascension to the community of Canchacancha which is mostly dedicated to agriculture and raising lamas and alpacas. Here we will have a hearty dinner and a good rest in our campsite.
DAY 3: CANCHACANCHA – QUEUÑAQ`OCHA (B)(L)(D)
After breakfast, we will head up-trail to Pachacuteq Pass where we will see the lakes of Azulqocha and also part of the Inca Trail zone. After about 4 hours we will be able to see the snow-capped Pitusiray and Sahuasiray Mountains. We then continue slowly for about 45 minutes and then start downhill to Queuñaqocha, a spectacular lake and a great spot for lunch. We can see common birds of the area here, later cross the waterfall of Canchispaccha, and small villages like Qeswarani where the people wear traditional clothing and work elaborate textile designs that have been passed on for hundreds of generations. Finally, we will make camp in Queuñaqocha, a place that is under a reforestation project.
DAY 3: QUEUÑAQ`OCHA – LARES – CUSCO (B)(L)(D)
After a good rest and breakfast, we walk about one hour to a beautiful viewpoint of Cuncaniqocha, then descend for about another hour, passing the lakes, waterfall of Ccaccahuayco, and descending to Cuncani community where we will have lunch with a great view of Chicon Mountain. We then descend some more to the valley of Cuncani for another hour, and then take the the dirt path to the hot springs where we can then enjoy a refreshing, relaxing hot soak after our 3 day hike. Finally, we take our return transport to Cusco.
