ITINERARY

DAY 1: CUSCO – MOLLEPATA – SORAYPAMPA OR SALKANTAYPAMPA (L) (D)

We leave Cusco very early, passing the picturesque villages of Izcuchaca and Limatambo, and after a 3 hours, we arrive to the village of Mollepata at approximately 9am.  After a break there, we continue on to Cruzpata where we will meet with our horsemen and mules and where we will start our adventure, hiking towards Salkantay Mountain and on to Soraypampa.  Along the way, we will take lunch with a panoramic and impressive view of the valley that will lead us to Mollepata village.  After a rest, we continue, with an appreciative view of the snow-topped Umantay Mountain located at 5460 meters above sea level.  Finally, we will arrive to our first campsite known as Soraypampa located at 3850 m.a.s.l.. On a clear night, it is a resplendent view, camping on the skirts of the Umantay Mountain.

DAY2: SORAYPAMPA – CHAULLAY- CCOLPAPAMPA (B) (L) (D)

After a good breakfast prepared by our expert chefs, we start the most important part of the trek (other than Machu Picchu).  Leaving around 6:30 am, we cross the Salkantay prairie with Umantay on our left side, along with Salkantay, and start ascending to the highest point of our trek,  Salkantay Humantay pass at 4500 m.a.s.l..  Here we can see the snow-capped peaks and glaciers of Salkantay, and after a rest at the highest point, start our descent, with appreciative waterfalls, changed vegetation common to the area full of bamboo and  a variety of birds and animals such as lamas and alpacas. We will pass the town of Chayllay, continuing to the second campsite called Collpapampa located at 2800 m.a.s.l..

DAY 3: COLLPAPAMPA – SANTA TERESA – AGUAS CALIENTES (B)(L)

After breakfast, we start our 3rd day early to see waterfalls, fruit trees (such as mandarin, oranges, bananas and granadillas), a variety of fauna and flora (like orchids), and then arrive to our lunch spot at Sawayaco.  After a rest, we continue our trip in transport until Santa Teresa, located at 1900 meters, and then to Hidroelectrica where we catch the afternoon train that will take us to Aguas Calientes town.  From there we will get set up into respective hotels, with the evening to check out many touristic restaurants, the hot springs located 10 minutes from the main plaza and a large hand-craft market, if interested.

DAY 4: AGUAS CALIENTES-MACHUPICCHU-CUSCO (B)

After breakfast in the hotel, we walk to the bus station to take the 30 minute bus ride up the hill to the Machu Picchu entrance (2400m), with opportunity to see the sun rise and to take advantage of this time without many other tourists.  The guided tour of the famous Incan temples includes main plazas, the circle tower, Solar sundial, living quarters, Temple of the Three Windows and the cemeteries of Machu Picchu.  Afterwards, you will have free time to explore and take more photos before catching a bus back down the hill to Aguas Calientes.  You will then take the train back to Cusco.

Note:  there is option to climb Waynapicchu Mountain, but it must be booked in advance at an extra fee, as there are limited daily spaces.

VERIFICAR DISPONIBILIDAD

Inka Sites Adventures offer daily departures on the Inca Trail (excluding February when the trail is closed).

Since 2000 the Inca trail has been regulated by the country of Peru. This has provided many wonderful things, like clean trails and camping sites, but it has also limited the amount of people on the trail each day. Now only 500 people are permitted on the trail every morning – this includes hikers, guides, porters and cooks. If your date is not available, do not fret, there are many wonderful treks to Machu Picchu – just as beautiful as the Inca trail and not as crowded.
