Cachicata Trek to Machupicchu 4D/3N

This is one of the alternative hikes to the Inka Trail that involves the beautiful Andes geography, rich history of Incan construction with beautiful stone walls and preserved ruins along the way. In Ollantytambo, you can still see immense abandoned rocks that were ready to be placed on the walls, of which came from the Cachicata quarries.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: CUSCO – PACHAR – RAPHCCA – QORIMARCA (L)(D)

After your breakfast in hotel, we will pick you up in our transport and head to Pachar.  Later we continue our adventure to Huaracondo Canyon and head in ascension to the community of Raphcca, located at 2900 meters above sea level.  Here we start our hike in the Valley of Qorimarca with its Incan water canals, farming terraces, and always accompanied by the beautiful snow capped mountains in the distance, like Mount Veronica.  There is a mega diversity of birds in this area, as we hike on to the Qorimarca ruins located at the summit of the Soccma Valley.  Later, we will arrive to our first campsite of the day, where we will set-up camp for dinner and sleeping in the area of Qorimarca.

DAY 2: QORIMARCA – PLACE OF CHANCACHUCO – Q’EUÑACANCHA (B)(L)(D)

After a good breakfast prepared by our expert chefs, we start out on the trek towards Chancanchuco (located at 4400 m.a.s.l.) where we will have a panoramic view of the Andean mountain ranges such as Mount Veronica, Ausangate and Qoyllority.  We continue our trip passing some lakes where we can see a variety of birds such as ducks, Andean geese, and others specific to this area.  Later we continue downhill until we arrive to Q’euñacancha, where we will stay the night.

DAY 3: Q’EUÑACANCHA – PUNKUYUC – CACHICATA – OLLANTAYTAMBO (B)(L)

After a pleasant night and breakfast, we start our trek in the direction of the Yana Orco hill (translated from Quechua to mean Black Mountain).  The trek is full of natural grasses common to the Andes Mountains until we arrive to the rocky top where you can see the Sacred Valley below, Ollantytambo way off in the distance, and our descending trail that leads into a forest of unique trees known as Q’euña.  We will arrive to the Inti Punku ruins (a name shared by a complex of ruins in the Machu Picchu area).  We can also see the Choquetacarpo Incan place, possibly a place that was used as a temporary residence for the Incan engineering group of workers, where to this day we can still see their amazingly carved stonework.  Here we will stop for our last group lunch prepared by the chef and have a break until we take our transfer by bus to the Ollantaytambo train station.  We will catch the train to the Aguas Calientes town and check-in to respective hotels.

NOTE: Option to stay one night in Ollantaytambo and take the first train in the morning to Machu Picchu.

DAY 4: AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHUPICCHU – CUSCO (B)

After breakfast provided in-hotel, we walk together to the bus station which will take us up the mountain (about 30 minutes) to the entrance of Machu Picchu citadel (2400 m).  We will have the opportunity to see the sunrise and enjoy few other tourists around at this time, as we start our guided tour of the City visiting principal plazas, the Circular Tower, Sun Dial, living quarters, Temple of the Three Windows and cemeteries of Machu Picchu.  Later there is free time to continue exploring yourself and take more photos before you descend the hill in bus to Aguas Calientes town.  From there you will catch the return train to Cusco city.

OPTIONAL:  to climb Waynapicchu or Machupicchu Mountain if booked in advance due to limited daily spaces.

CHECK AVAILABILITY

Inka Sites Adventures offer daily departures on the Inca Trail (excluding February when the trail is closed).

Since 2000 the Inca trail has been regulated by the country of Peru. This has provided many wonderful things, like clean trails and camping sites, but it has also limited the amount of people on the trail each day. Now only 500 people are permitted on the trail every morning – this includes hikers, guides, porters and cooks. If your date is not available, do not fret, there are many wonderful treks to Machu Picchu – just as beautiful as the Inca trail and not as crowded.
